Background:
Currently, when DOI and ISBN exist on a webpage, the extension will always prioritise using DOI and looking for article alternatives. When there is no available full text, it will then look for OA or ILL.
However, in this case, where there is also an ISBN on the page: https://www.emerald.com/insight/content/doi/10.1108/978-1-83753-244-520241021/full/html
the extension did not run any search against it. If it does, then an eBook Alternatives will appear. Because the ISBN is listed in their holding.
Suggestion:
If there are both DOI and ISBN on a page, and the response is negative for the DOI, can we also parallelly run a check on the ISBN? Because ISBN may be listed in the holding, but not the DOI.
Hello everyone,
I'm happy to share that we've rolled out key improvements to how we detect eBook Alternatives in the Lean Library extension
What’s new?
We’ve implemented enhancements to how the extension surfaces eBook Alternatives when both DOIs and ISBNs are present, and also improved eBook chapter detection in cases where only DOIs are found.
DOI to ISBN converter: The extension can now successfully convert DOIs to ISBNs and run checks for eBook holdings even if the DOI response is negative. This means that when a user is viewing an eBook chapter that only lists a DOI, the extension can now correctly associate the chapter with its parent eBook (via ISBN) and display eBook Alternative.
Why did we do it?
These updates are a direct response to your feedback on two key issues:
When a page includes both a DOI and an ISBN, the extension would previously stop searching if the DOI yielded no result, missing opportunities where the ISBN was in holdings.
eBook chapters with only DOIs were previously undetectable, even if the full eBook was available, leading to gaps in eBook Alternative visibility and inconsistent user experience.
Both cases highlighted the need for more intelligent, metadata-driven surfacing of eBook content to fully unlock the value of the diverse range of institutional holdings.
When is it live?
These improvements are now fully live.
There is no action required from institutions or users, they'll start seeing improvements straight away.

Hi everyone, thank you for the feedback and examples. We've added this to our roadmap for the last quarter of the year as part of our continuous improvements theme of work for our Alternatives functionality. We'll update here and through other channels when this goes live!
For a number of Numerique Premium ebooks, the DOI is not found or does not work at the moment. We therefore get an ILL pop-up even though we have access to these ebooks and they have ISBN and eISBN.

Hi Anja, thanks for providing example links and the excellent feedback. This, plus your other idea (https://technologyfromsage.aha.io/ideas/ideas/LL-I-132), is an experience that we'd like to improve this year, so we are adding this to our development backlog for one of our developers to investigate as we think we may have a neat solution. We'll update this idea ticket when we have some firm timeframes. Best wishes, Becca
